More than 1,000 people joined last month's 16th annual 5k Walk/Fun Run to benefit Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer of Southern Nevada. It was the first time the event was held within the Mountain's Edge master-planned community, where the fundraiser is now permanently based.
Major sponsors were Focus Property Group, developer of the community; and LandTek, a land development company.
"This year our goal was to recruit as many participants as possible," said John Ritter, chairman and CEO of Focus. "More than 500 Focus and LandTek representatives, fitted in yellow T-shirts, came out to support an organization that does wonderful work for children and families in need."
Total funds raised by the sponsors and participants exceeded $100,000.
"We exceeded our goals for the event in terms of raising awareness through recruitment and participation, and we plan to set even more ambitious goals for future events," Ritter said. "By continuing to raise the bar higher each year, together the community will make a real difference in the efforts of organizations that make a tremendous impact on people's lives locally."
More than 1,200 local families benefit from the emotional, educational and financial assistance provided by Candlelighters, according to Vince Schettler, president of the agency and an executive at Focus.
"We couldn't be happier with the outstanding turnout and show of support from everyone involved in the 5k," Schettler said. "The money and awareness that was raised is going to help many children and families in very difficult situations."
The event was held at the 80-acre Exploration Park.
Mountain's Edge encompasses 3,500 acres in the southwestern Las Vegas Valley. More than 500 acres are designated for parks and trails.
